Wind power development in United Kingdom

The installed wind power capacity in the United Kingdom is approximately 30.3 GW (30,299 MW) for combined onshore + offshore wind as of August 2024.

Here are some interesting numbers:

  • Onshore wind capacity alone is about 15 GW.
  • Offshore wind capacity operational is reported as over 16 GW.
  • The UK government has set a target of roughly 43–50 GW of offshore wind by 2030.

The largest wind farm currently in the UK is the Hornsea 2 Offshore Wind Farm:

It has an installed capacity of 1.3 GW (1,300 MW) and became fully operational in 2022.

It is located about 89 km off the Yorkshire coast in the North Sea.

It comprises 165 wind turbines and covers an area of around 462 km².

The largest wind farm on land is Whitelee Wind Farm in Scotland:

It comprises 215 turbines, located on Eaglesham Moor, near Glasgow (mainly in East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire).

It has a nameplate capacity of 539 MW (megawatts).

Wind power supplied about 29.2% of electricity generation (≈ 83.3 TWh) in 2024, offshore wind ~17% of electricity, onshore ~12.2%.
